Grey’s Anatomy meets A Deadly Education in this dark academia fantasy from USA Today bestselling author Freya Marske.

At the Academie of the Grand Duchy of Sieuxerr, every mage with the healer’s gift has five years to master their power and to prepare for the infamous Grand Exam—a five-day trial whose results will determine their entire future.

‍

The list of exam rules includes:

• You will perform five practical cases.

• Your exam group is chosen at random.

• You pass together, or fail together.

‍

It does not include:

• On the first day, your exam group will find a classmate's dead body in the exam hall.

And as they will soon discover, this particular group all have something to hide... and all have a connection with the dead girl, a brilliant scholar who would have been first in their class.

‍

Five scholars. Five secrets. Five days in which to solve a murder, pass the most important exam of their lives, and uncover a secret larger than all of their own combined. One with the potential to change the world.

Let’s begin.

Don’t just take
our word for it

"A twisty mystery, a fascinating system of medical magic, and a complex and compelling cast. 'Sleep is for summer' say the Academie medical students, and I can assure you, sleep is also for after finishing Bodies of Magic."

- Kat Howard, Alex Award-winning author of An Unkindness of Magicians

"Bodies of Magic crackles with Marske’s signature wit, effortlessly rich worldbuilding, and layered character dynamics. A perfect book, as complex and brilliant as a healing array. I absolutely loved it."

- Allison Saft, #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Dark and Drowning Tide

"Smart, sexy, compassionate, and utterly absorbing, with gloriously complicated characters and a world that feels sharp-edged and real. This book is everything I love about dark academia--I couldn't put it down."

- H.G. Parry, author of The Scholar and the Last Faerie Door

There was nothing beautiful about a body’s death. But a city could be beautiful in a dying way, especially in the last days before you left it. Especially if you weren’t leaving by choice, and would give anything to stay.

‍

Moyna gauged the distance between her rooftop and the next. The soles of her boots gripped the rough tiles.

‍

In dawn sunlight the stone of Sieuxerr turned the mauve of breath-starved fingernails, as if the buildings themselves were gasping for air. Moyna imagined the cure before she could stop herself: magic sliding into the small gaps between stones, coaxing them open to take a deeper breath. The blue streets flushing purple, then red, as life returned to the city’s bloodstream. Sights like this were why Moyna ran rooftops when she needed to get out of her head and back into her body. She could pretend that the city shared its secrets with her on purpose. That it loved her back.

‍

She clutched her satchel firmly to her hip and launched into the air, which cradled her for a heartbeat before she landed on the roof of the next building.

‍

Her right ankle sang a warning as her foot landed on the join between two tiles. Moyna wobbled briefly and found herself peering down through the gap she’d just leapt. A path between buildings: dirty grey stone rather than the blue of the main streets. Lethal all the same, from this height.

‍

Or would it be? It’d depend on the angle, and whether she smashed her skull. She imagined her body broken by impact. Long bones leaking blood and marrow into the tissue, or poking through skin. Ribs skewering lungs, perhaps. Spleen and liver burst. Her grey robe blossoming with red. No, nothing beautiful about it at all.

Book notes

  • 🙋‍♀️ Why we chose

Honestly, we’ve been chasing the high of first finding The Tainted Cup books for years now. And Bodies of Magic hits so many of those same notes: bio-magic fantasy murder-mystery, with elite worldbuilding, top-notch writing, and a loveable cast of characters. Not to mention the high-stakes locked-room setting—smack-dab in the middle of a notoriously difficult and prestigious five-day med school exam. We’ve got magic, murder, and dark academia—so many tropes to play with!

With an excoriating critique of the medical system, healthcare burnout, and built-in class dynamics, plus throw in a non-binary POV character (we love to see it!), and this book was a no-brainer for us. Read on if you’ve been hankering for a dark fantasy murder mystery with some serious edge.
