The darkness isn’t empty. It’s hungry.

At the edge of the City of the Void, a massive chasm extends miles into the earth, its treacherous terrain overrun with vicious monsters and carnivorous plants. For orphaned best friends Petra and Jade, guiding treasure-seeking tourists down into the Void is the only way to earn enough to pull themselves up out of the slums for good.

‍

Petra prefers to play it safe and take jobs only in the Void’s upper levels, where the dangers are better understood, while Jade wants to risk a descent to the deepest and most mysterious Sixth Layer. Because the deeper they go, the better the payout, and the sooner their dreams can become reality. Their friendship is Petra’s whole world, and Jade’s approval means everything—so Petra agrees to do it Jade’s way.

When their job goes wrong and Jade is lost in the Void, Petra must plunge deeper than she’s ever dared to save her friend. But she doesn’t know the truth of the Void…or what really waits for her in its depths.

Don’t just take
our word for it

"Spine-tingling and skin-crawling, this is cave horror like you've never seen before. Schlote-Bonne brings her own unique twist on subterranean terror, one that will force you to leave the lights on. What Feeds Below is absolutely horrifying, in the most positive way. I could not stop reading."

- Taylor Grothe, author of Lethal Kiss and Hollow

‍

"Lush and innovative worldbuilding, gruesome body horror...A nail-biting tale set in a beautifully rendered world of darkness and danger"

- Kirkus Reviews (starred review)🌟

"A gorgeously vivid and viciously entrancing nightmare of a story that had me hooked. With fantastical toxic plants and horrifying monsters and a high-stakes quest, it’s the perfect mix of surreal, addictive, and creepy. A must-read for anyone obsessed with botanical horror."

- CG Drews, New York Times bestselling author of Don't Let The Forest In and Hazelthorn

Get a taste

The man’s lips have been ripped from his face, his teeth bared in a terrible grin. Blood oozes from the mangled flesh where his right hand should be. I wince. Which creature could it have been? The stringy bits of tissue make it hard to identify specific teeth marks. Any predator in the Second Layer or deeper could’ve done that, really.

‍

“What do you think got him?” I ask Jade.

‍

“Stupidity.” She pops her bubble gum.

‍

I shield my eyes from the early morning sun, searching for this man’s guide. I want to ask what went wrong so I can add his misstep to my ever-growing list of “Things Not to Do in the Void,” but no one’s claiming the lipless man. He didn’t go into the Void alone, did he?

‍

The rescuers heave his body onto a tarp to carry him away from the mist of the First Layer and toward the nearby crematorium.

‍

“Any chance we can save him?” one of the medics asks his colleague.

‍

The other medic shakes his head. “We lost his pulse a minute ago. Looks like the poor bastard went in by himself. Barely made it halfway through the Second Layer.”

‍

Jade and I give each other a look.

‍

“Told you,” she says.

‍

The medics pass by us with the corpse, the rank stench of shit and piss souring the air. I itch the raised scar on my calf from the time I was bit by a cavetrapper. Jade and I are skilled Void divers with more than a thousand climbing, hiking, and caving hours in the Void’s upper layers, but still…each time we take a job, we’re one wrong step away from suffering the same fate.

‍

Jade reads my expression. “If you’re scared of that happening to us, don’t worry. We know what we’re doing, and more importantly, we have each other.”

‍

I nod. “I’ll always get you back to the top.” It’s been our saying since our first Void dive together five years ago. We’re best friends, practically sisters, and dive partners—for life. No matter what, Jade and I will always make sure the other returns to the surface.

Book notes

  • 🙋‍♀️ Why we chose

Are you tired of staring into the void? Trying diving in instead.

In fiction, a cave is always a metaphor: for interiority, the bits beneath the surface that no one else sees, for digging into the self, the psyche, the long-forgotten past…you know the drill. So when you see a book set in a cave—or in the Void, a miles-deep sprawling cave with six increasingly dangerous layers—you know you’re in for a real treat.

What Feeds Below gives us all that—the deep-diving and layer-peeling, both physical and metaphorical—plus a zingy kick of page-turning fun. It’s a brilliantly crafted coming-of-age sci-fi thriller, the kind of book you inhale in one sitting and think, just, wow. Reading it feels like stumbling upon something truly special—like finding a rare Third Layer glow gem (and the real thing, not a tricksy gem-tailed viper disguising itself as something precious).

If you’ve been on the lookout for some adventure, or just a guaranteed good read, don’t sleep on What Feeds Below. And if you’re still thinking of skipping it, our absolutely stunning special edition cover might convince you otherwise.
